A £12 million contract to transform the Argyle Street east area with new cycle paths, foot ways, carriageways and tree planting is to be decided on this week.
It comes as work is continuing on the Argyle Street West Avenue in the city centre with builders currently on site digging up the road.
Now Glasgow City Council plans to carry out major work on the public realm within the east area of the busy road as well.
A contractor is to be hired to carry out the construction work with councillors to make a decision on whether to appoint a particular firm at a meeting tomorrow.
Wills Bros Civil Engineering is being recommended to be awarded the deal as the company submitted the “most economically advantageous tender” according to a council report.
The report states: “This contract involves the appointment of a suitably qualified contractor to carry out public realm improvement works in the Argyle Street east area of the city.
It adds: “These works will include reconstruction of footways and carriageways to high quality public realm including creation of new cycleways and green/blue infrastructure.”
It is hoped the changes will make the make the road more attractive with new green areas and better public spaces. A new bus route is also part of the plans.
The transformation of streets into avenues involves planting trees and installing rain gardens, reducing traffic lanes, widening footpaths and adding cycle paths.
The avenues scheme is being funded with £123.42 million from the Glasgow City Region City Deal and £21 million from Sustrans.
The Contracts and Property Committee will decide whether to appoint the contractor tomorrow afternoon for the £12.19 million Argyle East public realm construction work.
