A plan to knock down a bowling club near A-listed homes is due to be decided on next week after 237 objections were lodged.

A developer has applied for planning permission to demolish the vacant Corunna Bowling Clubhouse at the western end of St Vincent Crescent to make way for flats and a community facility.

The clubhouse has been empty since the bowling club shut in 2017 and the site is overgrown, according to a council report.

The site sits within the St Vincent Crescent conservation area in Finnieston and objectors have voiced concern about losing green space, parking and traffic impact and privacy fears among other issues.

Applicant Nixon Blue hopes to build a six storey block of flats including properties with three and four bedrooms. There is also to be a single storey community building on the site.

The new housing would feature a roof terrace on the fifth floor and a basement for car parking and bicycles. All the flats would have a terrace or balcony and designs include 0.16 hectares of open space for residents of the development and the public to use.

Glasgow City Council planning officials are recommending refusal of the bid.

A council report said: “There are many positive aspects to the proposed development. The open space and community room would allow public access onto a site that has always been closed off. The design, materials and layout of the proposed development respect the special character of St Vincent Crescent conservation area and its Category A listed terrace.

“Twenty new homes would be provided in a highly accessible location. These would be larger three and four bed apartments that would contribute to the area’s housing mix.”

It added: “The many positive aspects of the development do not outweigh the loss of open space.”

The report said the council should “protect the site as an open space and community facility.”

Councillors are due to consider the application at next week’s planning application committee.
