Investment worth £350,000 has begun in the Craigheads area of Barrhead, as part of a pilot project to help improve the wellbeing of residents through targeted improvements in the surrounding area, local services and community engagement.
Craigheads is a residential estate in Barrhead made up of social housing, private rented and owner-occupied properties. The area has experienced long-standing environmental, social and wellbeing challenges, and the Council recognised this required a coordinated, place-based response.
Initial works have already started including general building works, jet washing of drying greens, fascias and other communal areas, and the repair of metal fencing and retaining walls. Further improvements are planned for the coming weeks and months, covering the cleaning and repair of gutters, repair of communal windows and stairwells and common close painting.
The £350,000 investment is one-off funding for 2026. The long-term hope for the project is to empower residents, tenants and landlords to take ownership of the community; building on the on the improvements made this year and creating a place people are proud to call home.
The Council is clear that for this project to be a success, the local community must be involved. An initial survey was recently issued, with all Craigheads residents receiving the information in writing, and valuable feedback and suggestions were received. This work supports the East Renfrewshire Community Planning Partnership Vision A Place to Grow, which sets the strategic direction for the area to 2040.
