People are encouraged to take a look at the role alcohol plays in their lives during Alcohol Awareness Week.
Inverclyde Alcohol and Drug Partnership (ADP) is running public information stalls where people can speak to services involved in the ADP, hear stories of recovery, undertake alcohol screenings and learn more about services to support people and their families.
They are being held on the following dates:
Tuesday 7 July in the Oak Mall, 9am to 4pm
Wednesday 8 July in Port Glasgow Health Centre, 9am to 12.30pm
Thursday 9 July in Greenock Health Centre, 9am to 12:30pm
The most recent statistics from the National Records of Scotland (NRS) show that in 2024, there were 21 alcohol-specific deaths registered in Inverclyde, down from 33 the previous year, a decrease of just over a third. The figures also found that in 2024, people in the most deprived areas of Scotland were 4.5 times more likely to die of an alcohol-specific death than people in the least deprived areas in 2024.
Councillor Francesca Brennan, convener of the Social Work and Social Care Scrutiny Panel, said: “One death from alcohol is one death too many and we are working hard to support people in need.
“Inverclyde ADP brings together professionals who can support people and their families through recovery.
“If you or someone you know could benefit from support, please go along to these information stalls or take a look at the ADP website.”
Alcohol Awareness Week runs from July 6-12 and is coordinated by Alcohol Change UK, a national third-sector agency.
This year’s theme is Alcohol and Me with people encouraged to explore the role alcohol is playing in their life. This could mean understanding more about personal alcohol risk levels, cutting back on drinking alcohol, experimenting with an alcohol-free experience or simply learning more.
