Teenagers including young refugees are desperate for a place to stay in Glasgow as health bosses appeal for caring residents to offer them a room.

The city’s Supported Carer Service would like to hear from people who could offer a spare room to a young person aged 16 and over.

An online meeting is taking place this evening (Thursday February 12) where people can learn more, as the city’s health and social care boss said “more and more young asylum seekers” are arriving in the city.

Pat Togher, chief officer of Glasgow’s Health and Social Care Partnership, said: “Some of Glasgow’s children are in need of family-based care beyond their 16th birthday and we know offering stability to a young person as they transition in adulthood is a vital role and rewarding role.”

He added: “We are also seeing more and more young asylum seekers arriving in Glasgow who are desperate for a safe and stable home. We know there will be families out there who do have a spare room, and who could help a young person out while they plan their future in Glasgow. It can be very rewarding.

“Our Supported Carer Service provides the relevant training to help interested families undertake the role and will assign a supervising social worker to provide ongoing support.

“There is an assessment process that helps us – and the potential families – determine whether they are ready for the role.”

The information session will take place on Microsoft Teams this evening, Thursday, February 12 from 7pm to 8.15pm.

Mr Togher added: ” You’ll have the chance to hear from our existing supported carers, about the assessment process and support provided to undertake this role.”

A statement from the HSCP said: “If you are over 21, have a spare bedroom, are patient and caring and would like to help a young unaccompanied asylum seeker, or someone aged 16+years, please email hostfamilyservice@glasgow.gov.uk.
