A rundown old bowling pavilion in Drumchapel Park can be transformed into a community hub and café after plans were approved.
Planners at Glasgow City Council have given the go ahead to a project which will see the unused building refurbished to provide a cycling workshop and multi-purpose community space.
It is set to be operated by two third-sector organisations, Drumhub and Drumchapel Cycle Hub. Bringing the dilapidated pavilion back into use is part of a wider scheme to regenerate Drumchapel town centre, which has been backed by UK Government funding.
Glasgow City Council, which secured almost £15m for Drumchapel from the government’s levelling up fund, is behind the pavilion project.
The third sector groups will operate in partnership but have two separate leases. Plans stated: “The pavilion will allow people of all ages to come together to learn to ride bicycles, teach cycle maintenance and provide bicycles to the local community.
“This will reinforce health activities within the park as NRS [the council’s neighbourhoods, regeneration and sustainability department] are investing in the children’s play area and Glasgow Life [the council’s culture and leisure arm] directed funding from the Lawn Tennis Association into the adjacent tennis courts.
“There are very few cafés in the local area as well as no public toilets within the park, so the project will have further practical benefits.”
Work on the pavilion will include adding external insulation systems, new windows and doors, hard standing areas, and two timber canopies.
Wider plans for Drumchapel received a boost in September last year when councillors approved a deal which involved tenants at Garscadden House renouncing their lease of the building.
At the time, a council official said the long-term plan for Garscadden House is to help tackle child poverty. Drumchapel’s library, at Hecla Avenue, is to be moved into the ground floor of the west wing of the two-storey office building at Garscadden Road.
