Buchanane bus sttaion plan

Proposed plans for Buchanan Bus Station

Written by Local Democracy Reporter, Sarah Hilley

A potential major transformation of Buchanan bus station would feature a new safe and ‘iconic’ circular building – and span two levels.

The vision for the transport hub could also possibly include new bridges with a link to Glasgow Caledonian University.

As part of the masterplan, new flats, shops, a hotel, offices and student accommodation are being considered. Concert Square car park could also be replaced in the long term as it is “deteriorating” and nearing the end of its life according to a council report on the masterplan.

A council official told a meeting this week how a vision for the development would include a transport hub where people can buy tickets and get information – which would be “at the heart of the bus station.” It was described as an “iconic building to house the bus station public functions” in a report.

The officer said the concourse would offer a “place of safety for the citizens of Glasgow” and would be very “active” at night time.

At an upper level there may also be a linear park and bridges.

Speaking at this week’s economy, housing, transport and regeneration city policy committee, the official added: “This bus station will be fully integrated into a high density residential environment”.

The concept masterplan for the bus station and surrounding city block was produced by Glasgow City Council and SPT (Strathclyde Partnership for Transport).

The council said it “proposes a mixed-use development with a modern and flexible bus station and mobility hub at its heart”.

Councillors sitting on the city administration committee also considered the bus station vision yesterday and approved the masterplan as a “material consideration for planning decision making”.

George Gillespie, executive director for neighbourhoods, regeneration and sustainability at Glasgow City Council, said: “The masterplan for the Buchanan Bus Station signposts the future development of this key city centre block, offering the chance to not only create a state of the art transport interchange, but also a mixed-use development that helps drive the future regeneration of Cowcaddens, Townhead and the wider city centre.”

The financing of the building and site transformation is to be developed.
