Glasgow council’s electric car spaces are being blocked by vehicles which aren’t even charging – hampering some of the fleet from powering up.
The council has sent out communications to staff about the problem taking place at a number of council charging locations.
Health and social care workers travelling to elderly people and vulnerable residents are among council staff who use electric vehicles to carry our their jobs.
Councillor Eunis Jassemi asked about the risks to front line service delivery in relation to cars accessing chargers after a report revealed some council “depots’ charging infrastructure is operating beyond existing capacity”.
In a reply to Labour councillor Jassemi, the council said: “The Electric Vehicles Charging Infrastructure (EVCI) is fit for purpose for the current level of electric vehicles deployed within the council. There are currently 161 EVCI units operational across 57 locations offering a total of 287 charging spaces for the use of the council fleet, representing around double the capacity currently required.”
It added: “There has been some operational issues identified where vehicles are parking in EVCI bays when they are not charging hindering EVs which need to charge. Communications have been issued to the impacted locations and users to mitigate this.”
The question from councillor Jassemi and the answer from the council was presented at yesterday’s operational performance and delivery scrutiny committee.
According to a report presented previously to the committee the council hopes to install more chargers at council depots and tap into external funding to make it happen.
