Site in Castlemilk to be leased
Written by Glasgow View Reporter, Liam Eunson
Glasgow City Council is to transfer land to a leading social enterprise and child-care provider to enable youngsters to better connect with nature.
The Indigo Childcare Group will use the land to create a secured ‘hideaway’ area for youngsters in the Castlemilk area.
The 25-year lease has been transferred through the People Make Glasgow Communities (PMGC) programme, which allows community and third sector groups to take over council venues.
The move has been welcomed by Cllr Ruairi Kelly, Convener for Housing, Development and Land Use, as “a fantastic example of what can be achieved through PMGC”.
The 2500-plus square metres of land, next to and accessed from Castleton Primary School, will be transformed to create a vibrant extension of Indigo’s childcare environment and a space for youngsters to help foster a deep connection to the natural world.
The charity – which has over 30 years’ experience in childcare – is the latest to successfully secure a long-term lease under PMGC, joining Park Villa Football Development who took on the running of the Glasgow Club Drumoyne, Pollok United Nethercraigs at Nethercraigs Sports Complex, Castlemilk Community Football Trust at Barlia Sports Complex and Toryglen Community Youth Project at the Geoff Shaw Community Centre.
Councillor Kelly said:
“This is a fantastic example of what can be achieved through our PMGC programme. The new hideaway area is a great idea, transforming land that had been surplus to the local school’s needs to create something that children will enjoy and find stimulating and I’m looking forward to getting a look around the hideaway when the work’s done. Congratulations to all involved.”
