Roof repairs are set to be carried out at Glasgow’s A-listed city chambers after plans were given the go ahead.
Work on the Glasgow City Council headquarters in George Square will include reslating and replacement of rooflights and leadwork.
Planners at the council ruled the proposals were “considered appropriate and will preserve the category A-listed building”.
In a report, they added the repairs would be focused on the southern centre section of the roof — to the Cochrane Street side of the chambers.
The council’s planning team has approved applications for planning permission and listed building consent.
An advisory note states no works shall begin during bird breeding season (April to September) unless a breeding bird survey is carried out.
It comes after peregrine falcons, named Bonnie and Clyde, chose the spire of city chambers as their nesting site. A pair of chicks were born earlier this year and were named after Still Game characters, Winston and Isa, following a public vote.
Currently, most of the slate on the roof is Scottish slate and it is proposed 60% of this will be reused when the repairs take place. The other 40% is “to be second hand and match the existing in size and type”, according to the report.
Renewal of all leadwork on the roof will include the gutters and flashings. It has been conditioned that the “repair and repointing of chimneys match the design and appearance of the original”.
Concerns have previously been raised about the state of the chambers, with Cllr Stephen Docherty, Labour, calling for more maintenance last year.
The report by council planners added that Historic Environment Scotland has welcomed the roof repairs. The government agency highlighted the importance of closely replicating the roof lights, which the council confirmed would be the case to “reflect the historic profile”.
Separately, a building warrant is being sought for the installation of seven air source heat pumps on the east roof of the city chambers as part of “heating system decarbonisation works”.
