Two Glasgow Commonwealth Games venues have been barred from selling cans of alcohol after police pointed out they could pose a safety risk if thrown.
Councillors decided not to allow the sale of tins of beer in spectator areas at Tollcross International Swimming Centre and the Glasgow International Arena – formerly named the Emirates.
Councillor Dan Hutchison told Friday’s city licensing board serving cans is a “risk” and they have been used as missiles previously.
Glasgow City Council applied for the grant of occasional licences for the venues while also requesting cans to be sold.
Police Scotland advised against the availability of cans as there was the potential they could be used as projectiles and there were concerns over public safety.
A representative of the applicant said there would be “enhanced security” as part of the Commonwealth Games events at Tollcross with the occasional licence requested between July 24 to 29.
Commenting on the sale of cans at the Glasgow International Arena where cycling and gymnastics will take place, a representative said: “We want to maximise the games experience for those attending.”
The application was for an occasional licence between July 24 to Aug 2 for the International Arena events.
Councillors sitting on the licensing board granted the occasional alcohol licences but knocked back the selling of cans of alcoholic drinks.
