DRC (Delivering Real Change) Youth Project, a local community organisation, has taken over the management and maintenance of Yoker Sports Centre in the latest development in Glasgow City Council’s People Make Glasgow Communities (PMGC) programme.

A Licence to Occupy for the Centre has been granted to the DRC Youth Project by Glasgow City Council through the PMGC programme. This Glasgow City Council programme helps and supports local people and organisations with their ambitions to deliver services in their communities. By taking over the management of the Centre, DRC will be able to expand the delivery of their services and outreach.

The PMGC programme offers the opportunity for interested organisations, groups, and individuals to become involved in the delivery of local services and projects by operating and occupying venues in their communities. The programme has already delivered a number of successful operations at city facilities over the past couple of years, such as Park Villa Football Development at Glasgow Club Drumoyne, Pollok United Nethercraigs at Nethercraigs Sports Complex, Castlemilk Community Football Trust at Barlia Sports Complex and Toryglen Community Youth Project at Geoff Shaw Community Centre.

Located at 2 Speirshall Terrace, the Centre has remained vacant since 2022. The facility features a reception area, an office, a main sports hall, and two multi-purpose rooms – one medium and one small. It also includes comprehensive changing and restroom facilities for men, women, and individuals with disabilities. DRC is fully committed to the significant interior restoration required to bring the centre back to life.

For the last 12 years, DRC has been a cornerstone of the community, managing office, training, and recreational spaces across North-West Glasgow. As a partner in the award-winning Pathfinder employability programme , the organisation provides vital support to local youth. Beyond training, they are widely recognised for the North-West Community Pantry n Dumbarton Road. This youth-led initiative distributes over two tonnes of fresh, affordable food weekly to families in need, while simultaneously providing training and development opportunities for more than 30 volunteers each year.

The DRC Youth Project is dedicated to offering on-going critical support to the most vulnerable and hard to reach young people within our community. They target areas such as youth employability, emergency food support, mental and physical health, alcohol, drug and substance misuse, and territorial issues with an aim to provide an alternative to crime, anti-social behaviour, addictions, and unhealthy lifestyles.

Through the PMGC Programme, DRC has evidenced their growing demand of services by the local and wider community through community engagement and consultation. Their application was assessed by both the PMGC and the Assessment Panel and was recommended to undertake a licence, before progressing to a 25-year lease.

Councillor Ruairi Kelly, Convener for Housing, Development and Land Use at Glasgow City Council, said:

“It is really pleasing to see yet another community organisation deliver more services that will benefit local people through the People Make Glasgow Communities programme. DRC carry out invaluable work to support young people in Glasgow, and by taking over the management of Yoker Sports Centre, they can expand on what they already deliver.”
