People across East Renfrewshire are being invited to help shape a new Recovery Hub that will provide a welcoming space for recovery, connection and wellbeing in the heart of the community.

The East Renfrewshire Recovery Hub, which will open before the end of the year, represents a significant step forward in strengthening recovery-focused support in East Renfrewshire by expanding community-based opportunities and helping people sustain recovery from alcohol and drugs to improve their quality of life.

A dedicated lived experience group has been at the heart of the project from the beginning, helping to shape everything from the design and layout of the building to the activities and support it will offer. Their involvement has extended to the smallest details, including the colours and overall feel of the space, ensuring the Hub reflects what people in recovery want and need from a recovery environment.

The Hub is being created within the Kirkton Annex at Barrhead Health and Care Centre, transforming an area previously used as office accommodation for East Renfrewshire HSCP’s Telecare and Care at Home services into a modern, welcoming community facility.

The project has been made possible through a one-off Scottish Government investment secured through the East Renfrewshire Alcohol and Drug Partnership, supported by additional capital funding from NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde.

When completed, the Hub will provide a range of flexible spaces designed to support recovery and wellbeing, including:

– A welcoming foyer
– A large community space for group activities, events and gatherings
– A second smaller room for activities, meetings and peer support
– Kitchen facilities where people can meet, learn and socialise
– Private, quiet room for one-to-one support and conversations
– Accessible bathroom facilities
– A community garden and outdoor space

The Partnership is inviting existing recovery groups, peer support organisations and community groups, who currently support people in recovery, to register their interest in using the space and / or being involved in activities. It is also keen to hear from volunteers, organisations and local groups interested in delivering activities and sessions at the Hub.

Activities could range from arts and crafts, music, gardening and creative writing to yoga, exercise, mindfulness, learning opportunities and peer-led support. Particular interest is being sought from individuals and organisations with experience of supporting recovery communities, although enquiries are welcome from any group that can contribute positively to health, wellbeing and social connection.

Councillor Katie Pragnell Lees, Convenor for Social Work and Social Care, said: “This project started with people who have lived experience of recovery telling us there was a need for a dedicated recovery space in East Renfrewshire.

“Their insight, experience and determination have driven the development of this Hub from day one. They have helped shape every aspect of the project, ensuring it reflects the needs and aspirations of people in recovery and their families.

“The result will be far more than a building. It will be a place where people can come together, build friendships, access support, learn new skills and continue their recovery journey in a positive and welcoming environment.

“Our long-term ambition is for the Hub to become a thriving community-led resource, shaped by the people who use it and supported by the wider community, so we want to hear from community groups, volunteers and organisations who would like to be part of this exciting next chapter.

“Whether you run an established recovery group, have experience of supporting people in recovery, or can offer activities that promote wellbeing and inclusion, we would love to hear from you.”

The lived experience group will continue to play a key role in the ongoing development of the Hub. Groups, organisations and individuals interested in using the space or delivering activities are encouraged to contact Voluntary Action East Renfrewshire – Ruth Gallagher T: 0141 876 9555 E: hello@vaer.org.uk
