Glasgow City Chambers
Written by Local Democracy Reporter, Sarah Hilley
A Glasgow councillor has called for improved early morning bus services as he tells of one-hour waits for transport in the city centre for commutes home after night shifts.
Councillor Anthony Carroll welcomed better evening bus services and extended subway hours but said early mornings must also be considered.
Speaking at a council committee this week he explained how a carer had recently told him they waited an hour on a bus to return home.
Recalling their situation he said: “They wait an hour in the town, until the first buses start to go again, to get home.”
The Greens councillor made the remark during the economy, housing, transport and regeneration city policy committee this week as transport was discussed.
Speaking after the meeting, he said: “We need to not only improve night time public transport but early morning too. It is not right that night shift workers have to wait an hour for the first bus service to get home – I hope we can make sure we have a service for night time workers entrenched through funded bus franchising as soon as possible.”
Responding to his question about whether there had been discussions with operators about expanding early morning transport, an officer said officials “will look at early morning” and a review being undertaken is not just about evening and night time – but will also incorporate the transport needs of people working night shifts.
The issues were discussed as councillors were presented with a paper on the the progress of the city centre strategy for 2024 to 2030 and the city centre strategic development framework.
