A councillor has claimed Glasgow city’s waste festive plan has not worked as rubbish has been piling up in Dennistoun.

Councillor Elaine McDougall says collections have been missed and east end residents left frustrated over mounting waste. Images shared by her show bags of general waste overspilling from bins in Ballindalloch Drive and Roebank Street – although these have since been emptied by waste workers.

Complaining about the build up of rubbish, councillor McDougall said: “The bins should have been emptied on January 7 or 8. I don’t think people believed it would be that long.

“The festive calendar did not work. They were meant to get sent to the flatted properties first. They were meant to empty ours on the 7th and 8th. That has not happened.”

The council said it hopes the service will return to normal for flats by early next week after the Christmas disruption when 250,000 bin collections stopped during the holidays.

A Glasgow City council spokesman said: “General waste was collected from these addresses on Thursday and recycling is scheduled to be lifted this week also.

“This is in-line with our festive waste plan, which aims to deal with the impact of over 250,000 bin collections stopping for the public holidays over Christmas and New Year and the additional waste generated by households at this time of year.

“We are very hopeful the service will have returned fully to normal for all residents in flats by early next week and we are following the schedule for those who receive a kerbside collection that was unaffected by the public holidays.

“For those homes that receive a kerbside collection that was affected by the public holidays, residents can be assured excess waste will be removed on the next relevant collection day, as planned.

“We know the disruption to the service can cause inconvenience to householders and we are very grateful for the patience and cooperation they have shown.

“Last year we introduced a new approach that placed a focus on shared bin areas and the service returned to normal much sooner than previous years with more people content with how the service operated.

“We’ve taken a similar approach over the recent festive season while taking on board feedback and lessons learned from last year.

“Flats affected by the public holidays had recycling bins emptied in advance of the festive season to free up bin capacity for residents.

“Additional resources have also been brought in to support the removal of the additional waste produced over Christmas and New Year.

“Our household waste and recycling centres are open seven days a week for anyone who wishes to dispose of their waste and our bulk uplift service is also available for larger items.”
