Work to promote religious equality across Glasgow by supporting people who celebrate Christmas and Eid and other festivals has been praised by local councillors.

Glasgow City Council has been continuing citywide anti-racism education programmes within schools, and developing a strategy to increase inclusion and diversity within communities.

During the recent wellbeing committee meeting, Councillor Fiona Higgins and Bailie Annette Christie thanked council officers for their dedication to improving equality.

The local authority has developed an anti-racism programme citywide in both secondary and primary schools which allows young people to showcase their anti racism approach and learn from one another.

The aim of this network is to share good practice and increase knowledge and confidence in responding to community incidents while supporting staff, children, and families.

The council has also been developing an Employment Equality Diversity & Inclusion Strategy & Action Plan for 2025 – 2027, outlining activity to increase diversity and inclusiveness of the organisation.

Regular meetings are held with all HR ED&I (equality, diversity and inclusion) leaders to ensure the action plan is followed.

During the meeting, councillor Fiona Higgins said: “I just wanted to say thank you for this extraordinary body of work. It is really quite inspiring to hear all the things that we are doing and there seems to be endless amounts of work to improve equalities across the city.

“I was delighted to hear about the promotion of different religious festivals. Glasgow is a very diverse city and where that can be tensions, and there has certainly been recently, something that always bonds people together is Christmas or Eid to see families coming together and enjoying themselves.

“I am really happy to see we are promoting different religious festivals so thank you so much for your work.”

Bailie Annette Christie added: “Thanks for all the work across all departments in ED&I practices and embedding that across all departments. It is incredible work.

“There are so many things that could be highlighted but it all comes down to this system approach so no one is out working in isolation. You can see year on year we are getting better at that.”
