East Renfrewshire Council is kicking off Scotland’s journey to the World Cup this weekend by renaming itself “East Robbo-shire Council” – in honour of Scotland captain Andy Robertson.
The move by the Council has been made to recognise the amazing achievement of Robertson, who grew up in East Renfrewshire and attended St Joseph’s Primary and St Ninian’s High.
As the first player to lead his country to a World Cup for 28 years, the Council wanted to mark the historic achievement by Clarkston local Robertson.
And the local authority will play under its new East Robbo-shire banner for the entirety of Scotland’s World Cup run – backing the national side every step of the way.
Council Leader Owen O’Donnell said: “We couldn’t let Scotland head to the World Cup without showing our support. Andy Robertson is East Renfrewshire’s greatest sporting success story and someone our communities are proud of. He has captained Scotland onto football’s biggest stage, so it’s only right that East Renfrewshire does its bit to get behind him and the team. Renaming ourselves East Robbo-shire Council is a bit of fun to show our support to him and all the squad. We’ll be cheering the team on every step of the way and, like fans across the country, we’ll be hoping for a tournament to remember!”
The newly named East Robbo-shire Council was launched at a special World Cup celebration at Robertson’s old school, St Joseph’s Primary, on Friday morning in advance of the country’s opening match at the World Cup.
