Football pitches and changing rooms across Glasgow are set to be upgraded using almost £1.7m of cash from housing developers.
Councillors in the city will be asked to back a plan to improve facilities at six venues when they meet next week.
Pitches at Glasgow Green, Bellahouston Park and Springburn Park are among those expected to benefit from the funding.
City development plan policies require contributions from developers towards sport provision when “facilities are not provided on housing sites”.
Glasgow Life, the council’s culture and leisure arm, commissioned specialists to assess the condition of pitch surfaces within its portfolio.
Now, it is proposed to invest £315,820 at Nethercraigs Sports Complex, run by Pollok United, to convert an existing grass pitch and four-lane athletics track into a full size, 3G synthetic pitch.
Officials report the new pitch would be “capable of better accommodating current and future demand from rugby, football and American Football”.
The overall project is expected to be funded through developer contributions, UK Government and SportScotland support and money from Pollok United, who hold a long lease on the site.
A council report also reveals just over £258,000 could be provided towards the replacement and ongoing maintenance of the synthetic pitch at Palace of Art in Bellahouston Park.
It adds the proposed works will include upgrading perimeter fencing behind the two goals and “full replacement of the now unsafe spectator rail along the north elevation”.
“These improvements are essential to restoring the pitch to a safe, FIFA Quality standard, that will continue to support year-round use for structured football activity,” the report continues.
Changing rooms at Toryglen Regional Football Centre and Crownpoint Sports Complex are set to be refurbished, with nearly £602,000 expected to be allocated from developer contributions.
Glasgow Life funding and applications to the Scottish FA and UK Government are also proposed to help deliver the project.
More than £350,000 could be allocated to upgrading synthetic pitches and changing rooms at Glasgow Green football centre. The council report states: “Due to sustained high levels of use, both pitch provision and support accommodation now require renewal and upgrade.”
One full-size pitch and four 5-a-side courts would be refreshed. The changing room refurbishment would focus on two communal suites on the first floor of the facility, primarily used by women. Referee accommodation would also be upgraded.
Glasgow Life is also expected to provide money towards the project.
At Springburn Park, a contribution of £162,840 could be made to improve the pavilion and help replace the synthetic pitch.
Works would include upgrading fencing and “specialist maintenance equipment to protect the long-term condition of the new surface”, while there would be full re-wiring, plumbing/sanitary ware replacement, new fire doors and new finishes in the pavilion.
Funding would be “conditional on all commercial matters being in order between Brunswick Community Development Trust and Glasgow Life”, the council report adds. The trust, a local charity, operates the venue and signed a 25-year lease last year.
Other funding sources for the project could include the UK Government and the Scottish Football Partnership Trust.
Some of the cash provided to each of the projects would go towards ongoing maintenance costs. Councillors will consider the proposals at a meeting of the city administration committee on Thursday.
