Funding opportunities to operate a free electric shuttle bus service in Glasgow are being explored by council officials according to fresh reports.

A document being presented to members of the scrutiny committee next week highlights that a feasibility report on funding for an alternative bus service has been carried out.

It comes after proposals to create a shuttle service from popular venues in Glasgow were made to the council last year by Labour councillor Stephen Docherty following a survey which revealed cars and buses were the city’s biggest polluters.

A report showed that people’s homes were the second biggest polluter followed by the commercial sector which had the third highest source of CO2 emissions in the city.

During a net zero committee before Christmas councillor Docherty asked officers if it would be possible to create a shuttle service from sites like the Hydro and Hampden to encourage people to use public transport rather than rely on their cars.

Glasgow City Council has been trying to tackle climate change through a number of measures including installing solar panels on public buildings, adding more cycle lanes and introducing the LEZ in a bid to meet its net zero targets.

Glasgow declared a climate emergency in 2019 and set a target of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2030.

An action plan has been developed and several plans are underway to understand how best to achieve this.

Councillor Docherty previously said: “In relation to transport and I realise this is a difficult one, maybe we could have shuttle buses from the Hydro, Hampden and for the Commonwealth Games 2026 to get more people to stop using their cars.

“If we could get electric buses and people onto the trains as much as possible rather than driving that would be a good one and it would help reduce the carbon emissions.”
