Further funding to help women and their families facing gender-based violence move into a secure home could be needed to help more survivors of domestic abuse.

During yesterday’s Operational Performance and Delivery Scrutiny Committee members were advised that the Make a House a Home project was coming to an end.

The project was launched to support women and families affected by gender based abuse to move into a sustainable tenancy by providing them with up to £1,000.

The money was used to provide items such as household essentials and safety measures.

Since its launch Make a House a Home has supported 279 families with 469 children who have been supported to move into their new home with the average support package amounting to £771.87 per family.

During yesterday’s meeting Bailie Martha Wardop asked about potential further funding as domestic violence is an ongoing issue.

Bailie Wardop said: “I would like to inquire about the ongoing funding for making a house a home in the interim.

“Is there any allocation of funds for 2026/27 even for the first three months to allow for the continued support while the monitoring report is finalised and presented for further decision making.

“It would be helpful to understand how much funding would be needed for three months or some sort of interim funding arrangement because I still think they’ll be a need for that support.

“Domestic violence isn’t reduced in the face of financial situations families are in. I would assume there would be some sort of demand that will still be needed.”

A council officer advised that at the moment there is no additional funding earmarked for this project.

They said: “There was a quarter of a million pounds at the start. I can certainly get back and verify that with the project lead and then get back to you.”

An update is expected to be presented at the next scrutiny committee meeting.
