Staff at Glasgow City Council are being encouraged to declare any disabilities they have to their employer as work to support employment and training opportunities continues.

A report presented to members of the wellbeing committee shows specialist services are in place for parents, ethnic minority communities, young people and disabled people working for the council.

The local authority also provides interventions for people to progress into work such as training for work, paid work placements, and in-work support.

During the meeting, councillor Robert Mooney asked: “In paper one it says at the chief executive’s office the number of employees with disabilities is 5.7% which is a massive improvement from what it was a number of years ago which was 2.5%.

“What is the percentage of people with disabilities in the council? I believe that there has been an increase from that 2.5% but is that increase because we are actually employing more disabled people or it is because more of our employees are identifying as having a disability.”

Members were advised that it was tricky trying to get details and information from these groups of people and that employees may have become better at reporting and recognising disabilities in recent years.

There are also initiatives to encourage staff at Glasgow City Council to declare disabilities where appropriate.

A council officer said: “The 2.5% was an increase in the number of employees who previously hadn’t disclosed their disability status but now have.

“From March 31, the number of disabled employees was 1,051 but that is still 144 in the previous year. Around 50% have not disclosed anything so we are not aware of their status.

“We are working to encourage people to report that information.”
