Lana and Jon'S 100 Mile Cycle
Written by Local Democracy Reporter, Catherine Hunter
Two city councillors are cycling the 100 mile Glasgow Way on Monday in a bid to raise money for a charity dedicated to helping those with complex needs.
Councillors Lana Reid-McConnell and Jon Molyneux are fundraising for Buddies Clubs and Services which supports children, young people and adults with complex disabilities across Glasgow.
Buddies, based at Southbrae Drive in Jordanhill, has been described as the last group running a hands-on service for children and young adults with complex disability needs.
They launched their fundraiser earlier this year as their ability to deliver their vital services has been put at risk due to funding.
Now the two councillors have combined forces to help raise money for a charity very important to them.
Councillor Molyneux said: “My friend Gordon and I came up with the idea of a long-distance walking route that stays entirely within the Glasgow city boundary, called The Glasgow Way. Last summer, we walked all 110+ miles of this to raise funds for a charity that helps families like mine that are affected by rare genetic conditions.
“Lana and I both got into using the Voi bikes earlier this year in a big way and that got me thinking about turning The Glasgow Way into a one-day bike ride. The route is slightly shorter because it has to stick to main roads, bike lanes and sealed paths, but it still covers 100 miles and visits all council wards.
“I’m really looking forward to getting out and giving it a go. It’s a chance to raise a bit of cash for Buddies which is a fantastic Glasgow charity and maybe it can inspire others to get out and explore our fabulous city by bike.”
Funding for organisations like Buddies is becoming tougher, with immense pressure on social work and education, there is less support and opportunity for those whose lives are affected by disability.
Councillor Reid-McConnell added: “Buddies is based in my ward so I have been trying to support them in the past few years.
“They do serve families from across the city – although it is predominantly for people in the North West of Glasgow. They have had a lot of difficulty in terms of funding streams.
“There have been various ways in which I have tried to support them. We really wanted to support their proud funding efforts which are still ongoing and to both raise awareness for what they are doing but talk a bit about that within education and social care it is really tight on funds and those with additional support needs.
“I think it is going to take us about ten hours, but eight hours of actual cycling but we are planning to do a few stops. We are going to start at the City Chambers and go via Buddies.
“We originally planned to raise £500 but we have now surpassed that so we are looking to raise as much as possible.
“Buddies do amazing work and are invaluable to the young people and their families they support day in and day out. I think it is really important to support them where we can.”
