Glasgow City Chambers
Written by Local Democracy Reporter, Catherine Hunter
Glasgow City Council is looking to team up with West Dunbartonshire to achieve its net zero targets according to fresh reports.
A document being presented to members of the scrutiny committee next week highlights that the local authorities are developing a “cooperation agreement” to achieve these targets by supporting Glasgow’s climate plan and West Dunbartonshire’s climate change strategy.
Meetings are expected to take place throughout the year and reports will be presented to councillors annually.
It comes after Glasgow declared a climate emergency in 2019 and set a target of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2030.
A broad ranging climate action plan was developed in response to the 2019 declaration and detailed work has taken place to understand how to reduce carbon emissions.
The council has previously acknowledged that there is a need for more rapid and radical action to reduce harmful emissions into the environment, reverse biodiversity decline and build a more climate resilient city with an aspiration of becoming Net Zero Carbon by 2030.
Whilst there is an understandable focus on stemming the flow of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, there is also a corresponding emphasis on utilising nature-based solutions and nurturing our relationships with the natural environment.
West Dunbartonshire also has an action plan to tackle climate change and achieve net zero emissions by 2045 – a target set by the Scottish Government.
The council is looking to mitigate and adapt to climate change by meeting its interim target of a 61% reduction in required by 2030/31, 87% by 2040/41 and net zero by 2045/46.
Both councils are now expected to identify a series of opportunities to collaborate through sharing of best practice while identifying further areas for collaboration.
