Glasgow has seen a 65 per cent rise in foreign investment pouring into the city, with shops from abroad opening in Silverburn and elsewhere.

Spanish clothing brands Bershka and Pull&Bear have unveiled their first stores in Glasgow at the Pollok shoppping centre while Zara has expanded.

New stores have also arrived in the east end with Adidas and Victoria’s Secret launching at the Fort while Rodd & Gunn have established a premises at Royal Exchange Square and Other Stories at Princes Square.

A council report said there has been a 65 per cent rise in Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) projects attracted to Glasgow last year during 2024 to 2025.

It said there has been a “a notable increase” in the sectors of financial and business services and retail.

The report pointed out there were 12 major financial and business services projects announced compared to 10 the previous year.

It added: “However, the most obvious difference has been the performance of the retail sector with Glasgow attracting 10 new projects compared with four in the previous year. Glasgow’s recent upturn and improved resilience in its retail sector have seen a wide range of new global brand arrivals and expansions in the city including Zara (Silverburn), Rodd & Gunn (Royal Exchange Square), Adidas (The Fort), Victoria’s Secret (The Fort), & Other Stories (Princes Square), Pull & Bear (Silverburn) and Bershka (Silverburn).”

It continued: “It is anticipated that 2025 to 2026 may reveal a continued positive performance in the retail sector with recent openings by Uniqlo, Anthropologie, Mango Teen, and Miniso.”

The information will be presented at next week’s economy, housing, transport and regeneration city policy committee after councillor John Carson asked what was driving the increase in FDI.

In June last year Ernst & Young’s (EY) Attractiveness Survey 2024 revealed Glasgow was Scotland’s leading city for FDI.

Glasgow emerged as the second-most popular UK city outside of London for FDI, after Manchester.
