Proposals to combine Glasgow City Council’s legal graffiti wall project with the mural trail have been suggested by a local councillor.
During the recent environment and liveable neighbourhoods committee Bailie Annette Christie told members she thought it was time to bring the two initiatives together.
It comes after a paper was presented to the committee to demonstrate the success of the legal graffiti wall pilot which showed that designated legal spaces can support artistic expression and enhance the appearance of public spaces.
Consultations have found that so far there is a high level of public support for these walls with benefits including taking pride in the community and enhancing previously underused spaces.
The report highlighted how opportunities will continue to be explored to establish additional Legal Graffiti Wall locations across the city and where possible support youth engagement, cultural participation, community wellbeing and regeneration priorities.
So far pilot locations for the scheme include Custom House Quay, Cowcaddens underpasses and the walkway from Partick to Riverside Museum.
Bailie Annette Christie said: “Now that we have moved beyond the pilot stage, I would suggest that it is time to maybe bring them [graffiti walls and murals] together.
“Particularly as you have seen the great success and the development of young artists that will go on to do great things in the future.
“Where there’s a key focus on a public art strategy, I would like to see that combined.
“As we are looking to expand beyond ward 10 hopefully, I would really like to see it go into the East End and align with projects that hopefully will be starting very soon.
“There are [organisations] proposing to do murals but working with local people. A number of different artists and organisations are involved, SWG3 being one of them, to work with young people as an activity for those who have been involved in youth disorder.
“I would very much encourage that.”
