Glasgow-originated travel agency, Barrhead Travel, reported its strongest trading day on record, following its annual ‘Back to the Floor Day, with holiday bookings on the Saturday after pay day up 37% year-on-year.
Saturday 31 January marked a milestone for the business, delivering record sales performance across its network and capping off a robust start to the year. The pay day weekend rounded off January on a strong note, with growth recorded across all areas of the business.
For the month all sectors finished in a growth but the strongest development came from long-haul travel, touring and adventure, and cruise.
Barrhead Travel originated in 1975 as a single, small shop in the Glasgow suburb of Barrhead. Since opening in Glasgow, the company has grown from a local shop to one of the UK’s largest independent travel groups with their recent trading marking a significant milestone in their company growth.
The annual ‘Back to the Floor Day’ saw 80 members of the Barrhead Travel head office team and key supplier partners return to retail branches nationwide, working alongside frontline colleagues during the critical final trading day of the month. Barrhead Travel Managing Director, Nicki Tempest-Mitchell, together with Barrhead Travel President, Jacqueline Dobson, was in the Glasgow Silverburn store supporting the team.
Nicki Tempest-Mitchell, Managing Director of Barrhead Travel, said:
“We are delighted to be heading into February with a solid sales foundation to build on. ‘Back to the Floor Day’ is all about fun, energy and collaboration – bringing our entire business together to support our retail teams at the most important trading point of the month. Our supplier partners are a huge part of our success, and many are delighted to roll up their sleeves and help in any way they can – whether that’s offering product expertise, making teas and coffees, or simply being on hand for customers.
“By removing titles for the day, we create a flat structure that allows the business to flourish and puts our customers firmly at the heart of everything we do.”
In terms of travel trends, Barrhead Travel continues to see strong demand for traditional family favourites, including all-inclusive holidays and cruising. However, there has also been notable growth in customers planning further ahead for ‘bucket list’ destinations such as Japan, Thailand and Australia, reflecting a sustained appetite for long-haul and experience-led travel
