Glasgow’s Executive Director of Education announced

Glasgow Council's new Executive Director of Education, Mr John McGhee

Following a successful interview Mr John McGhee, current interim Executive Director of Education and former headteacher at St Andrew’s Secondary School in Glasgow has been announced as Executive Director of Education.

Mr McGhee will take up post immediately and will oversee education services for the council including almost 300 early years, primary and secondary schools in the city.

Susanne Millar, Glasgow’s Chief Executive has welcomed the appointment and said: “This is great news for the city.

“John has worked in the city for many years and is passionate about the learning and teaching of Glasgow’s children and young people and has proved his commitment and worth over the last five months as interim director.

“Before John moved to St Andrew’s Secondary School, he was Headteacher at John Paul Academy and deputy headteacher at All Saints Secondary.

“With over 30 years’ experience in education, I know that John will bring with him a proven track record in leadership and a commitment to education and building on his success and hands on experience as interim director.”

John McGhee, Executive Director of Education Services has accepted the offer and the chance to continue the work he has already begun.

He said: “I am delighted to take on the role of Director of Education in Glasgow on a permanent basis – it has been an honour to have already started the journey to continue to improve the life chances of young people in Glasgow.

“Our young people have so much potential and I am excited to work to unlock that potential to give every young person the skills to have purposeful and fulfilling lives.

“Glasgow is a wonderful place to live and work and our young people play an important role in developing our future city.

“A city whose young people and families I have had the privilege of working alongside for over 30 years. Throughout my career, I have witnessed the resilience, creativity, and ambition that define Glasgow, and I am deeply committed to ensuring that every child and young person can thrive.

“My professional journey has been rooted in collaboration with schools, families, and partners across the city, always with a focus on improving outcomes and creating inclusive environments where learning can flourish. Over the years, I have led initiatives that have strengthened educational provision, supported staff development, and enhanced opportunities for young people. These experiences have reinforced my belief that education is the cornerstone of social progress, and I am eager to bring this perspective to the wider strategic leadership of Glasgow’s education services.

“My aim now is to build on the strong foundations already in place while driving forward innovation and excellence.

“Working in partnership with colleagues, families, and communities, I am committed to ensuring that our education system continues to empower every learner and reflects the aspirations of this vibrant city.”
