Waste dumped in Sauchiehall Street
Written by Local Democracy Reporter, Catherine Hunter
A trade union convenor is urging residents to “have some respect” for their city and not to “dump” their rubbish all over the back court.
It comes as footage taken from the back court of a tenement property in Sauchiehall Street shows waste strewn across the outdoor steps and patio area and the bins empty.
Chris Mitchell, GMB cleansing convenor, says the state of the back court in question is “an absolute disgrace” and is a health and safety hazard.
Chris said: “We don’t know who has left it like that but it must be the residents. The workers went up to it to do their duty but it was like a war zone of litter for want of a better word.
“These are the kind of conditions our members are having to go into and it is totally unacceptable.
“The bins were empty and the rubbish was just scattered everywhere. It was vile. People need to take into consideration the impact that has.
“It is disease ridden, it’s putrid waste. Sanitation isn’t very nice and there is no doubt there will be rats hiding in that because there is food lying there amongst everything else and it is right in the heart of Sauchiehall Street.
“It is not a good look for the city centre.
“I would urge the residents of that back court and all back courts to be mindful when they are disposing of their rubbish because those conditions are absolutely deplorable.
“If you are staying there it is damaging to your health as well, not just my members. This is about having respect for yourself and the city centre.
“That back court could be used on a sunny day and be enjoyed for what it is but it is like a dump site.”
Glasgow City Council says any waste not contained in the bins provided will not be collected by their staff.
A council spokesman said: “This back court is privately owned and its maintenance is a matter for the owners, factors and residents.
“Our staff are emptying the bins at this location. Any waste that’s not contained in a bin will not be removed by our staff.
“Items such as the discarded mattress can be taken away by our team if residents request a bulk uplift for just £5 per item.”
