Glasgow City Chambers. The council is set to sell a Govanhill site which has been repeatedly targeted by flytippers, with plans for it to become a car park.

A patch of public land used as a regular dumping ground by flytippers is to be sold and blocked off for a car park.
Glasgow City Council is selling the Batson Street site in Govanhill to Hanison Estates Limited.
The firm owns the adjoining former Govanhill Picture House at 45 to 49 Bankhall Street – currently used as a shop selling clothes, accessories and other textiles, according to the council.
A council officer said Hanison Estates approached the local authority about purchasing the plot to support the “development of their warehouse and retail facility”.
Speaking at today’s contracts and property committee, they said: “A key issue is the site is regularly subject to extensive flytipping, which is having a detrimental impact on the adjoining businesses and local residents as well as placing additional pressure on the council’s cleansing services”.
A council report said: “By acquiring the subject, HEL intend to apply for a stopping up order to enable the site to be used as a designated parking area in connection with the adjoining business.
“This will facilitate further retail space to open within the building and help prevent fly-tipping issues.
“A right of way, for the benefit of Glasgow City Council, will be included in the terms of sale to allow maintenance and access to the MUGA and(Holycross Primary) school.”
The price of the 0.1 acre site – which has been designated as an adopted road or footpath – was not revealed during the meeting.
Yesterday councillors sitting on the contracts and property committee gave permission for the council to start negotiations to sell the 0.04 hectares.
The site was judged as surplus in 2022.
Committee chair Franny Scally said the move should “help the people of Govanhill”.
