Proposals to extend Glasgow Subway’s operating hours once the network is modernised have been praised by the local Green group.

It comes as SPT’s (Strathclyde Partnership for Transport) partnership agreed to consider the new Subway opening hours which would come into effect once the upgrade is completed.

SPT has already confirmed that once the work has been carried out it will be in a position to extend service hours beyond the current schedule.

Glasgow’s Green Councillors have welcomed the decision to extend hours on a Friday and Saturday until 12:30am at night, and 11:30pm on a Sunday, rolling out in 2027.

The “Nightshift Glasgow: City Centre night-time vision” report, created in collaboration with Glasgow City Council and the Night Time Industries Association Scotland, highlighted the lack of later night provision of the Subway as “a key deterrent to later stayers”.

Bailie Christy Mearns welcomed the news, saying: “I’m delighted that SPT have committed to expanding the Subway hours over three days – Greens have been calling for this expansion for years now and it will be a fantastic benefit to the public and the night time economy to have this in place.

“Sunday hours in particular have been a long-standing annoyance for passengers, so I look forward to increasing public transport availability at night to stimulate the night time economy, and I hope it can be extended even further in the future.”

Greens’ Workforce spokesperson Cllr Anthony Carroll also commented: “This is a welcome step in addressing the Council’s support for the Get Me Home Safely campaign – ensuring that workers who finish later at night are able to access night-time public transport.

“I hope to see this expanded for weekdays to ensure those working in areas such as hospitality during the week can access the subway later too.”
