Bus journeys are to be speeded up on two heavily congested roads as delays across the whole city cost £24 million annually according to research.

The Paisley Road West route linking Paisley and Glasgow city town centres, which faces gridlock will see buses getting priority. There is to be new infrastructure to deal with pinch points and improve the time of journeys.

Pollokshaws Road between Eglinton Toll and the city centre, which also has congestion problems, will also see bus priority proposals developed to reduce delays.

Councillors will receive an update on the progress of bus related work in the city next week.

A total of £300,000 will got towards design work for the The Pollokshaws Road Bus Corridor project while the Paisley Road West project will receive £450,000 – from the Scottish Government’s Bus Infrastructure Fund.

Contractors have been approved for both schemes and work is under way to “map key stakeholders” and develop engagement plans according to a council report.

University of Glasgow’s Urban Big Data Centre research has showed that traffic congestion causes the loss of 1.2 million hours of bus passenger time every year, with a cost of around £24 million annually.

Other bus work for the city will include improvements to Hope Street including wider pavements, better pedestrian crossings and bus shelters and the use of AI data on Pollokshaws Road costing £490,000 to amend traffic signal plans.

Councillors sitting on the economy, housing, transport and regeneration city policy committee will receive an update on the bus improvement work taking place next week.

A report going to the committee said councillors will be informed about “progress and key developments relating to the Glasgow City Region Bus Partnership, the Bus Partnership Fund, SPT capital funding, and the work of the Bus Operators Coordination Group”.
