A donation of £17,000 has been made to Ardgowan Hospice through Greenock Crematorium’s participation in a charitable fundraising initiative.

The crematorium, which is operated by Inverclyde Council, participates in a recycling of metals scheme run by the Institute of Cemetery and Crematorium Management (ICCM) and raises money for good causes.

Staff have once again chosen Ardgowan Hospice as their designated charity and a cheque for £17k was handed over.

The hospice supports around 1,200 people and their families every year and over 65 per cent of its running costs are raised through donations and fundraising.

It costs around £11k a day to run the hospice.

Councillor Michael McCormick, Inverclyde Council’s convener of environment and regeneration, said: “We know what an incredible job Ardgowan Hospice does supporting the people of Inverclyde and their families during the most difficult of times and it’s been well-documented the financial challenges facing the hospice.

“That’s why I’m delighted the crematorium staff have chosen once again to support the hospice and that we are able to make such a large donation thanks to the council’s participation in the ICCM recycling of metals scheme.

“But this really is all down to the continued support of families who have lost a loved one and who give their blessing for the ongoing participation in the scheme.

“I’d like to thank them for their support, which helps to make a difference to local charities like the hospice.”

The council has been part of the ICCM initiative for a number of years and this is the latest donation to the hospice.

A cheque for £10k was presented to the charity in 2025 and £12k in 2022.

Colette Cameron, marketing and communications manager at Ardgowan Hospice, said: “We are extremely grateful to the wonderful team at Greenock Crematorium for their continued and generous support.

“Receiving these funds from the ICCM recycling scheme again means the world to everyone at Ardgowan Hospice, especially during these financially difficult times for hospices across Scotland.

“This donation directly supports our efforts to provide compassionate care to local patients and families when they need it most.

“Thank you for choosing us as your beneficiary and for your ongoing commitment to our charity.”

Other Inverclyde charities that have benefited from the metals recycling scheme in recent times include Parklea Branching Out in Port Glasgow and Greenock-based The Anchor, both of which received donations of nearly £6k in 2025.

The ICCM has raised over £19 million for charities since the recycling of metals scheme was created.
