The start of Kenmuir road, just off Estate Road
Written by Local Democracy Reporter, Catherine Hunter
Changes to the agreed use of land being sold at Kenmuir Road to Carmyle Developers for £1.45 million is expected to be approved later this week.
It comes as the proposed purchaser, Carmyle Developments Limited (CDL), waits for its planning application, submitted back in November 2017 for a new housing development to be reviewed by the council’s planning department.
Development of the land is expected to impact a significant part of Carmyle and includes CDL’s former Kenmuir Farm and other areas of land that have been acquired by the organisation.
A document was previously presented to members of the Contracts and Property Committee in November last year and following discussions it was agreed that this paper should be resubmitted at a later date.
An amendment to the clause for the agreed off-market disposal of land at Kenmuir Road to Carmyle Developments Limited will be presented at committee later this week.
This means that use of the land needs to be in line with the existing masterplan, the pending planning application and any subsequent planning approvals.
Despite the council supporting the disposal of land, this has led to tension within the community who believe that the greenspace should be preserved and that a housing development would have a detrimental impact on the surrounding wildlife.
Campaigners feel that money would be better spent reopening the community centre, upgrading the local swing parks which are outdated and in need of repair.
Chris Mitchell, who is opposed to the plans, previously said: “We want major investment but in the right places and to protect the green space.
“Money should be invested in extending classrooms at the two local schools Carmyle Primary and St Joachims.
“We should be focussing on reopening the community centre which has a hole in the roof and we should be upgrading the two swing parks that were built in the 90s which are outdated and in need of repair.”
