Browns Newsagent on Paisley Road West, Cardonald
Written by Local Democracy Reporter, Sarah Hilley
A local Glasgow shop has vowed to close off its alcohol display at school lunchtimes when pupils visit after being granted an off sales licence.
Councillors approved the licence for Browns Newsagents on Paisley Road West in the Cardonald area as the premises faced objections including one from a nearby convenience store.
A solicitor representing Browns applicant, Mn Akbar Properties, said customers “will have no access to the alcohol area during school lunch times”.
He told the licensing board it will be “closed off” as children visit the shop during their lunch time break from school.
The shop wants to expand its offerings of cards, balloons, newspapers and other goods to “add another string to their bow” according to the solicitor.
There were five objections to the bid for an off sales licence including from the operator of a nearby shop who voiced fears the sale of booze would lead to increased anti-social behaviour.
He said his premises experiences regular thefts and anti-social behaviour.
Speaking at the board meeting he said: “It is my view there will be an increase in access to alcohol and increased consumption, which will exacerbate problems of anti-social behaviour.”
Addressing the concerns, the solicitor representing Browns, said: “This is not something our clients have experienced. They have a nice customer base. They have no issues.”
The solicitor said he didn’t see how granting the licence would lead to anti-social behaviour including theft.
The majority of board members approved the licence but councillors Margaret Morgan and Alex Wilson refused.
Councillor Wilson who represents the area said he and fellow Cardonald councillor Jim Kavanagh had received negative comments about the bid to sell alcohol.
