A primary school in the north east of the city has scored an ‘excellent’ rating and two ‘very good’ grades during an inspection.
St Monica’s Primary School in Milton has been judged as an influencer due to the work taking place.
Actions include P6 and P7 children getting specialised training to manage conflict which they use to “resolve difficulties in the playground”, according to an inspection report.
Pupils also receive opportunities to talk about their feelings at school among other actions. Teachers are also described as “highly skilled at questioning to extend children’s learning” in the HMIE inspection report.
Eighty three per cent of the 403 children at the primary live in two types of areas, which have the highest levels of deprivation – SIMD deciles 1 and 2.
The primary has been one of 13 schools and two specialist education facilities recently inspected with the results overall described as “very positive.”
Describing the achievement at St Monica’s, council education boss John McGhee said: “very few schools in the system get an excellent rating across the country so we are very well pleased with that.”
He explained that being rated as excellent means the school must be “sector influencing – so the work of the school has to be influencing the wider system”.
St Monica’s on Liddesdale Road scored excellent in ensuring wellbeing, equality and inclusion, very good in leadership of change and raising attainment and achievement and good in learning, teaching and assessment.
The inspection results were presented to councillors sitting on the Glasgow City Council education, skills and early years city policy committee last week.
The inspections took place during the 2025 to 2026 school year.
St Brigid’s Primary School was also highlighted in the council report for achieving ‘very good’ grades for leadership of change, learning, teaching and assessment, and ensuring wellbeing, equality, and inclusion.
