Glasgow bins
Written by Local Democracy Reporter, Sarah Hilley
A firm is being hired by the council to expand its bin hub roll out as “huge increases” in the amount of rubbish being recycled have been reported according to a councillor.
A total of of 1,600 four wheeled bins are to be supplied by firm Storm Environmental for the hubs after councillors approved the award of the contract yesterday.
Bin hubs have already been introduced in Pollokshields, Haghill, Anderston and Cessnock.
Councillor Ruairi Kelly said: “In Pollokshields there has been a four to five times increase in the recycling in that area. Obviously it will differ from area to area but with the segregated recycling opportunities the teams are seeing a huge increase in those areas of both the volume and quality of recycling as well.”
The SNP local politician was responding to a question from Labour councillor Fiona Higgins at yesterday’s Contracts and Property committee.
Councillor Higgins asked: “what measurable improvements does the council expect in recycling performance and street cleanliness and how will we know whether the roll out of these 1600 bins is actually delivering outcomes.”
In response a council official said information is being monitored and he will supply the data.
A council report presented to the committee said: “Following on from the success of the June 2023 bin hub pilot within four areas of the city, the aim of this contract is to introduce bin hubs and new bins to support waste and recycling servicing in tenemental properties and other challenging flatted properties across the city.”
Glasgow City Council’s had set aside a budget of £576,000 for the bins but the exact contract value was deemed “commercially sensitive” and has not been revealed.
