Holland Park Homes, Holland Street
Written by Local Democracy Reporter, Sarah Hilley
A new GP surgery has been planned for Glasgow city centre as its population is to double up to 40,000 residents.
The growing number of people living in the city centre currently have limited access to local doctors with an expansion of homes in the area taking place.
The new GP practice could accept up to 30,000 registered patients and be based in a building within the Holland Park homes development on Holland Street.
A total of £600,000 is to be invested in the premises and it is proposed Glasgow councillors approve a £200,000 grant towards fitting out the property at next week’s city administration committee. Holland Park developer MODA is to match the funding as well as Barclay Medical Practice, which is earmarked to operate the facility.
Councillor Angus Millar, city convener for city centre recovery, said: “Growing the city centre’s population is vital to supporting its recovery and regeneration – but that must go hand-in-hand with better amenities and local services for residents.
“Improving access to GPs is an essential part of our effort to create a sustainable city centre, which is a thriving neighbourhood in its own right.
“The new surgery will greatly increase primary healthcare capacity in the city centre and also significantly extend the kinds of medical support directly available to residents.
“I am delighted that the council is able to support a new GP surgery at Holland Park, a development which is itself a good example of the new homes being delivered in the city centre as part of its ongoing transformation. This facility will be open to residents not just in the immediate Charing Cross area, but across the city centre and in neighbouring communities such as Anderston.”
The new practice will provide additional consulting rooms, strengthened women’s health services, evening and weekend service and space for mental health support, pharmacist-led care and chronic disease management.
Barclay Medical Practice currently operates a surgery on St George’s Road, but the size of the premises means the level of health services provided are restricted and registered patients are limited to less than 9000.
Plans for the new surgery have been approved by NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde and will triple the clinical capacity of Barclay Medical Practice’s St George’s Road surgery while also greatly expanding the healthcare support that’s available.
The proposal will be presented to the city administration next week.
