New student flats are to be built in a Glasgow city centre car park as councillors approved the bid yesterday.

The seven storey Renfrew Street block, providing 82 beds for students, would sit at the base of Brutalist designed Fleming House.

People lodged 23 objections to the plan raising concerns about loss of daylight and overshadowing, worries about noise as well as an adverse impact on the conservation area.

Yesterday’s planning applications committee heard the flats are to be built on a “long term vacant site” which is “constrained”.

An official described the bid from developer Inehaze as a “small purpose built student accommodation (PBSA) scheme in a well designed and modestly scaled building”.

Speaking at the meeting, he added: “The application proposal provides the opportunity to develop a vacant brownfield site within the central conservation area for a contemporary building of appropriate scale, design and materiality compatible with its city centre setting.”

A council report said the accommodation would be arranged in clusters of “four, five, six and seven bedrooms with each cluster having an associated kitchen, living and dining area”.

Councillor Saqib Ahmed said: ” I’m very happy with the proposed development. Obviously I know this area very well. Building accommodation will go well with the housing crisis at the moment. It is in the city centre -very close to education institutions.”

He added: “It will boost the life in the city centre itself. I’m very much in favour of this particular development.”

Committee chair Ken Andrew said: ” I think it activates a dull wee corner of this street. I think this is a decent application.”

The application process has been ongoing for more than 10 years it is understood.

Councillors agreed to approve the application subject to conditions.
