North Toryglen TRA

North Toryglen regeneration

Written by Local Democracy Reporter, Catherine Hunter

Work to regenerate North Toryglen is expected to be completed this year after more than a decade of redevelopment.

North Toryglen is one of Glasgow City Council’s TRAs (Transformational Regeneration Areas) which are long-term, housing-led urban renewal projects developed alongside Transforming Communities: Glasgow.

They aim to replace poor-quality social housing with mixed-tenure communities as well as create jobs and improve local environments.

North Toryglen was a 24 hectare derelict site located between Mount Florida and Rutherglen, North of Prospecthill Road.

Since phase one of the TRA project, launched in 2014, the site has seen all but 50 of the 1960s-built homes and shops demolished and replaced with 393 new mixed tenure homes for sale and rent. It is on track to become the first completed TRA.

An update was brought before members of the economy committee yesterday as key aspects of Glasgow’s Local Housing Strategy 2023 to 2028 were discussed.

During the meeting, Councillor Paul Leinster said: “[I wanted to] comment on the TRA’s and their effectiveness in my ward in North Toryglen.

“We’ve now got a brand new park and we’ve got hundreds of new homes, think the last of which will probably be finished later on this year.

“I would like a comment on the effectiveness of that model and how clearly we’ve seen vacant and derelict land sit for decades and decades, there’s a very clear sort of timeline, that 20 years in the grand scheme of things is not very long for the huge amount of work that has been done in that area.

“It is a great module clearly and hopefully it is going to be as effective in the final two areas that you mentioned.”

A council officer confirmed that North Toryglen will be the first TRA to be completed, with the programme halfway through completion.

They said: “I think it is a really great example of bringing together all those different investment pots and all those different partners.

“The Transforming Communities Glasgow, which is a partnership between ourselves, Wheatley Homes Glasgow and the Scottish Government has been fundamental to that success.

“We are actually only halfway through the TRA programme and regeneration does take a long time.

“It has obviously taken longer to get onto Red Road, Ibrox and Govan. Because it is a programme approach, it means none are forgotten and we move on – the commitment has been made.

“There are really positive discussions about getting additional investment around Red Road so we can have a development site within that community.”
