Glasgow City Chambers

Questions over whether Glasgow City Council’s supermarket voucher strategy can be extended to help people leaving homeless accommodation have been raised by a councillor.
A report presented to members of the operational, performance and delivery scrutiny committee shows that the health and social care partnership (HSCP) for Glasgow has supported 1300 service users so far.
They have benefited from the programme which offers supermarket vouchers, worth £50 on average, to help assist with the purchase of basic items to allow residents to sustain their new tenancy.
A total of £65,000 has been spent on extending the scheme, which builds on a previous approach developed during covid 19.
The money came from the Tackling Poverty Fund and is part of the city council’s efforts to fight poverty by maximising cash coming in for families who have low incomes including households where adults work.
During the recent committee meeting, Bailie Martha Wardrop said: “I wanted to ask about the HSCP supermarket vouchers and the funding that was allocated has been fully distributed.
“Is there a monitoring report for that funding and is there any funding available to continue the scheme?
“I am assuming that there will still be people needing those vouchers. Is there any other signposting that can be done to help homeless people access vouchers?
“What happens if they are needing assistance at the moment?”
A council officer advised that discussions about the voucher scheme were ongoing and a detailed answer would be brought back at a later date.
They said: “The funding for that was part of a package of six or seven project streams through the tackling poverty fund which was a one off funding.
“We are creating a report that basically goes through the whole and every kind of project that was captured under that umbrella which we will make available.
“We have been discussing the vouchers this week and we would hope to have a more detailed answer going forward.
“We are looking at options for that and I will include that in the general report.”
