‘World class’ padel tennis courts are to be built as part of the multi million Meat Market sheds transformation in Glasgow with work expected to start within months.

The huge regeneration project is receiving an extra £600,000 in Scottish Government funding and work on the B-listed structures is due to begin in August.

Originally badminton courts were part of the plans but they are now being replaced with padel tennis facilities as it is the “next big thing,” a meeting heard today.

Plans for the sheds could include a sports hall, enterprise centre, events space and bar/bistro.

The increased Regeneration Capital Grant Fund award was accepted by councillors today at the city administration committee with the council also contributing £400,000.

Explaining how he appreciates it is a “complicated project,” councillor Jon Molyneux asked “what assurances do we have that work will start in August 2026” pointing out he is concerns “that this doesn’t drag on longer and we see spades in the ground.”

He said the funding needs to be drawn down by the end of March.

An official said the £600,000 uplift is in relation to a change of scope, adding that it is “not necessarily to do with any uncertainty in project delivery.”

Labour leader councillor Rashid Hussain asked what the change of scope was.

In response the official said a badminton court plan is being replaced with “the next big thing” padel tennis facilities – providing a stable financial future- which the extra money will go towards.

Councillor Elaine McDougall said the project is ongoing since 2021 and asked for a breakdown of spend to date and work that has taken place.

She added: “I don’t see a lot happening down there and I think there has been a considerable amount of money spent.”

An officer confirmed he would provide the details and said there are a number of funding sources.

The additional money will allow the “Meat Market Regeneration Community Interest Company to deliver world-class padel tennis courts at the sheds, and progress the delivery of other elements of the project, including community and business space”, according to a council paper.

The paper added: “The additional RCGF award brings the project’s total award from this Fund to £3,932,600.”
