Plans to build Glasgow homes on a demolished high rise site are starting to move forward after more than a decade.
A total of 450 homes are to be built on derelict land where the Red Road tower blocks once sat.
Wheatley Homes is set to construct affordable housing on the Barmulloch plot and it is also hoped some private homes may be built, a council meeting heard this week.
A business case will be presented to the Scottish Government for more funding to carry out remediation to ensure the site is suitable.
City councillor Graham Campbell previously raised concerns about “slow progress” on the abandoned site since the Red Road flats were knocked down. Demolition began in 2012 and took place in phases.
Speaking at yesterday’s economy, housing, transport and regeneration city policy committee, the SNP councillor asked about the timeline for the new homes.
In response, a housing official said: “In terms of Red Road – we set up the local delivery group and we are currently putting together a business case for the Scottish Government with Wheatley Homes Glasgow around some additional funding to help with the remediation and infrastructure requirements on the site.”
She added: “In terms of timescales, we still have to work through that. There are still investigations going on onsite so we won’t know the outcome of that until the end of this calendar year. Then we will be able to put a firmer programme in place for that.”
Councillor Campbell also asked about the situation regarding development in Sighthill – where the final phase of affordable homes are to be delivered.
The official said lots of “fantastic” housing is being erected in Sighthill, which is “brilliant”.
She said they are waiting for an update from developer Keepmoat “on their delivery plan” and pointed out that another 300 homes would be added.
The update was provided as councillors were presented with a refreshed draft Strategic Agreement between Glasgow City Council and social landlord Wheatley Housing Group. The agreement, which would last until 2032, is to be approved by the council’s city administration committee.
