Vacant land off Elliot Street

Plans to extend the use of land at Elliot Street for another two years as a filming location have been submitted to Glasgow City Council’s planning department.

Permission to use the vacant land bounded by Elliot Street, Lancefield Quay and Lancefield Street, as a film and television unit base for 12 months was approved in December 2024.

Now an application from Autoporto Limited to continue to use the land for a further two years has been submitted to the local authority.

In a planning statement, the applicant highlights that Elliot Street has acted as the most prominent and popular city centre unit base in Glasgow and has supported the film and television industries since 2020.

During that time, the industry has generated a total in excess of £96m in direct and indirect revenue for Glasgow.

In 2024, Glasgow hosted 140 film and television productions, which generated an estimated £33 million in local expenditure.

Notable productions included the series “Shetland”, the second season of Apple TV’s “The Buccaneers”, BBC’s “The Bombing of Pan Am 103”, Sky’s “Lockerbie: A search for Truth”, and the US feature film “The Running Man”.

The statement reads: “The availability and use of the land as a unit base continues to play a significant role in attracting film production to Glasgow, and this has brought enormous benefits to the city of Glasgow and will continue to do so until development commences.

“The location of the site is ideal, being in close proximity to the City Centre, West End and Riverside which are frequently used for filming.”

A planning application was previously logged by MODA in September 2023 for the site for the development of a mixed use development including shops, businesses, hotels and a residential development.

The application has not yet been determined but if approved, Elliot Street will stop trading as a unit base, prior to the start of the development.

If the application for the TV and film base is approved, it will prevent the site from lying vacant and derelict until it can be redeveloped.
