A plea to extend Glasgow’s cycle hire and storage units across the city has been issued by a local councillor.

During this week’s environment and liveable neighbourhoods committee councillor Jon Molyneux said there was a need to expand the network as much as possible.

It comes as members were asked to note the progress on cycle hire, cycle storage contract provisions and campaigns promoting active travel.

The council’s Active Travel Strategy and Delivery Plan set out the ambition for a 270km City Network of segregated cycle routes by 2030 and officers are progressing projects that will deliver around 86km of new infrastructure.

Councillor Jon Molyneux said: “There is a huge amount going on and it is really good to see a positive impact actually being evidenced.

“One of the things is the new cycle hire scheme. I guess I am interested in what opportunities there are to support the expansion of that network and parking locations.

“I know right now there is a lot of demand because of the impact on the network with the Union Street fire and I have had reports of people wanting to return bikes to parking locations and being told they are full.

“This speaks to the need to expand the network coverage if possible.”

A council officer advised that they were aware of the usage and how it has increased in the south side particularly.

He said: “With what is going on in Union Street people find alternatives to travel into the city.

“We are aware of congestion issues around transport hubs effectively on those key routes where people are going to and from.

“What you are suggesting is that people are not able to put a bike in a location because it is full. We have seen some of that come up in correspondence through members of the public or member enquiries.

“We now have a thousand bikes on the street and yes they are being distributed around and people use them but we also know that we need to grow the scheme and distribute that a wee bit more.

“The team is looking at that and new locations to distribute some of the bikes as well and we will look at bike shelters being full.

“We know the scheme is not quite perfect but we are working on it.”
