A chicken shop in Pollokshields has secured permission to open late despite neighbours complaining it disturbs the community.
Pepe’s Peri Peri on St Andrews Road can now open until midnight after Glasgow’s licensing committee handed the owners a late hours catering licence.
They initially asked to serve customers until 3.30am from Thursday to Sunday, but changed the proposal in an effort to “provide some comfort” to objectors.
Glasgow City Council received 11 objections to the late hours bid, including from local councillors Jon Molyneux, Greens, and Norman MacLeod, SNP.
One objector told the city’s licensing committee: “Pepe’s, as they currently trade, causes a number of issues for us.
“The amenity of the surrounding area is detrimentally affected by the current level of trading. Any increase in trading is going to exacerbate these problems.”
He highlighted concerns over litter and noise, including out of hours working and bins being emptied after 11pm.
“It’s beyond what’s reasonable, we don’t get anywhere with staff when we raise these issues,” he added.
Niall Hassard, the licensing lawyer representing Pepe’s, said his clients’ association with the restaurant had been “fairly short-lived”.
The premises had been “poorly run” and “poorly managed” by the previous franchisee, he told councillors.
The applicant, Mahendher Reddy Gangavarapu, and his business partner had taken over in March, the committee heard, and invested around £150,000 in a refurbishment.
Mr Hassard said they had worked for Pepe’s elsewhere and were seen as a “reliable, trusted pair of hands” to turn the Pollokshields restaurant around.
He added they were aware of “some concerns about noise after closing”, which was due to the cleaning company contracted by his clients. They now clean in the morning before the restaurant opens, he said.
Mr Hassard said his clients were happy to exchange contact details with the objectors.
Late hours catering licences are generally not granted beyond midnight if the premises are in a tenement, with residents above.
Pepe’s had originally asked to open until 2am from Monday to Wednesday and until 3.30am from Thursday to Sunday.
Councillors agreed to grant a licence, with the time amended to midnight, for one year. A three-year licence had been requested.
