Glasgow’s Sauchiehall Street is to receive £2.3 million to help to reverse the historic road’s “economic decline” and high shop vacancies.

The iconic street is in line for cash from the National Lottery Heritage Fund -for the creation of the ‘Sauchiehall Street Culture and Heritage District.’

Under plans the McLellan Galleries will see preservation work carried out and the Cameron Memorial Fountain would be restored. And there are set to be public realms improvements at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall steps among other landmarks. Along with other work, shop fronts are also to receive makeovers under the proof-of-concept phase running until December 2027.

A Glasgow City Council report said: “Sauchiehall Street is one of Glasgow’s most iconic thoroughfares, rich in architectural heritage and cultural significance. In recent years, the area has faced challenges including, building deterioration, economic decline, high vacancy rates, and major fires.”

It added:” In tandem with the delivery of high-quality streetscape improvements via the Avenues Programme, the Sauchiehall Street Culture and Heritage District (SSCHD) initiative seeks to reverse this trend through culture and heritage-led regeneration, creating a vibrant, inclusive, and sustainable cultural corridor.”

Councillors are to approve the acceptance of the funding jointly with Glasgow Life for the Sauchiehall Street Culture and Heritage District proof of concept phase at next week’s city administration committee.

The £2.3 million award comes after £350,000 from the National Lottery Heritage Fund was received in 2024 for an exploration phase for Sauchiehalll Street.

Glasgow City Council is to make a contribution to the project of £400,000.

The scheme is a partnership between Glasgow Life, Glasgow City Council, Glasgow Film Theatre, Scottish Ensemble and Articulate Cultural Trust among others.
