South Portland Street Avenue

A street has been transformed with new CCTV and cycle paths at the end of an historic bridge as part of the ongoing avenues project.
The South Portland Street avenue, on the south side of the river, has also gained 13 trees and rain gardens. Walkers crossing the A-listed South Portland Street bridge across the Clyde will reach the redesigned road.
A community celebration is planned for Wednesday to mark the opening.
Councillor Angus Millar said the street previously had uneven surfaces and no resting places while Councillor Soryia Siddique described the recent transformation as a “milestone”.
SNP Councillor Millar, convener for climate, transport and city centre recovery at Glasgow City Council, said: “The completion of the South Portland Street Avenues Plus project marks the latest phase in the biggest transformation of Glasgow city centre in the last 50 years.
“Before this work, South Portland Street had low lighting levels, uneven and inaccessible pedestrian areas, a lack of tactile pavements and no resting points.
“Now there are new accessible pedestrian spaces, generous segregated cycle lanes, five new seating areas, and new CCTV infrastructure and an accessible EV charging point have been added, along with rain gardens and 13 trees. All of these new features contribute to a more attractive area in which to live, work, visit and travel through in different ways.”
Siddique, southside Labour councillor, said: “It is expected that the opening of South Portland Street Avenue is a positive milestone for all communities and an important investment in creating a greener, safer and more accessible city.”

The community opening of the bridge will take place at the Hope Hub on the street on Wednesday from 1pm to 3pm.
There is to be talks on rain gardens and urban trees as well as walking tours and free refreshments.
The work is part of the multi million avenues scheme – seeing streets changed across the city to become more pedestrian friendly and greener.
