A new strategy to tackle violence against women and girls (VAWG) has been agreed by Inverclyde Alliance.
Covering 2026 to 2029, the Violence Against Women and Girls Partnership Strategy has been developed through the Inverclyde Violence Against Women and Girls Multi Agency Partnership.
It recognises violence against women and girls as a violation of human rights and a manifestation of gender inequality.
There are four key strategic priorities in the plan:
– Violence against women and girls is prevented
– Women, children and young people are safe and supported
– Interventions are early, effective and coordinated
– Perpetrators are held accountable and supported to change
The plan includes details of local initiatives which are already working towards the key priorities including: Inverclyde Council’s commitment to renew its Equally Safe at Work accreditation; Inverclyde’s Multi-Agency Risk Assessment Conference (MARAC) which provides a coordinated response to victims assessed as being at highest risk of serious harm or domestic homicide; early identification through routine enquiry which is embedded within health visiting services in Inverclyde; and court advocacy and support services which are provided by ASSIST to victims in Inverclyde involved in court proceedings, to improve victim safety, engagement with justice processes and strengthen perpetrator accountability.
Inverclyde Alliance is the local Community Planning Partnership which brings together representatives from a wide range of public and third-sector organisations including Inverclyde Council, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, Scottish Fire and Rescue, Police Scotland and West College Scotland.
VAWG involves Public Protection and the Community Planning Partnership and requires coordinated action across multiple agencies to prevent harm, protect victims and support recovery.
Councillor Elizabeth Robertson, chair of Inverclyde Alliance Board, said: “This is an important strategy and one which recognises the seriousness of violence against women and girls.
“This report details the good work which is already being done in our communities – but more needs to be done.
“This plan isn’t just words on a page, it is a public health and whole-system approach which is focused on prevention, protection, early intervention and coordinated partnership response.
“It will be supported through annual action planning and ongoing performance reporting so we will know the impact it is having.
“I am pleased this important issue is being tackled at this level by agencies working together to make sure women and girls are safe in our communities.”
