A west end deli faced 20 objections from residents who were worried about it being turned into a “nighttime alcohol selling venue” if it was granted a licence.
Objectors voiced concern that the granting of an alcohol premises licence and later opening hours at Kothel would spoil the quiet street of Hamilton Park Avenue.
Kothel, which sits on the corner of the street and Great Western Road and has outside tables, wanted to make changes and open after 6pm to meet customer demand as people were asking for a glass of wine beer.
Among the objectors to the plan was Councillor Martha Wardrop who told last week’s licensing board that residents want to enjoy Hamilton Park Avenue as a “peaceful haven”.
She said people are worried about the extended hours and alcohol.
Voicing concern about noise from glass bottles being thrown in bins, one objector said: “It is important that people can get a good night’s sleep.”
Another resident said: “It might be a good excuse for late night drinking. There is quite enough alcohol provision in the area.”
He said the proposal presents “a significant change to a residential street”.
He voiced concern about Kothel being transformed into a “night time alcohol selling venue” in a 150-year-old residential street.
A representative of the applicant, Kothel GWR, said complaints resembled a “doomsday scenario”.
He told the board customers will be inside by 6pm and bottles would be put out in the morning.
He pointed out the businesses is a deli selling sandwiches and there would not be big parties, weddings or anti social behaviour.
He added: “It is not and never will be a student venue.”
The board was told the changes were needed to meet customer demand as people were asking for wine or beer with food.
The licensing board granted the premises licence.
