A Glasgow landlord has received a severe warning for renting out rooms without a licence and been slammed for putting tenants at risk.
The west end HMO, housing four people at 166 Hyndland Road, had been operating without a licence after there was a failure to renew it.
The city’s licensing and regulatory committee was told tenants remained in the second floor tenement flat despite the lack of licence.
Mr Knowles, a representative of the applicant Tahira Akram, apologised over the situation.
Pointing out the property became unlicensed in September 2024, committee chair Alex Wilson asked Mr Knowles if any of the tenants were requested to leave given the circumstances.
In response Mr Knowles answered: “no”, adding that “the tenants are very comfortable and settled”.
Councillor Wilson said: “Although the tenants were comfortable, they were at risk.”
Speaking at the committee yesterday, Councillor Wilson said the property would not have been insured in the case of fire.
He added: “It is an exceptionally serious situation in terms of property management.”
The committee granted the new HMO licence for a restricted period of one year and issued a severe warning regarding the future management of the property.
A licensing report said: “The property was previously licensed by the applicant, but they failed to timeously apply to renew their licence.”
An inspection of the property in September 2025 found the “standard of management may be said to be satisfactory notwithstanding the administrative error leading to the failure to timeously renew the licence”, according to the report.
